Built by Africans. Seen by the World.

I borrowed phones to photograph a continent.

In 2015, Abdoulaye Sissoko started documenting African life with whatever device he could find. No studio. No budget. Just a mission: show Africa as it really is.

From borrowed phones to a growing visual archive

It started simply: I wanted to capture the Africa I knew — the one that rarely appeared in international media. The markets, the kitchens, the laughter, the textures, the real daily life.

I traveled through villages and cities, borrowed phones from friends when mine wasn’t available, and shot thousands of moments that mainstream stock agencies would never license. Because they weren’t looking.

Since 2015, I have been building what I believe the world needs: an authentic visual archive of Africa — not the Africa of clichés, but the Africa of now.

How we compare to classic stock platforms

Criteria Classic stock platforms AfroStocker
Origin of images Often studio-shot, sometimes out of context, sourced from occasional contributors Photographed directly on location in West Africa, real context
Depth on the subject A few hundred “Africa” images diluted among millions of generic photos A focused collection dedicated to African culture, food, crafts and daily life
Visual authenticity Often repetitive, polished “stock-typical” poses and lighting Real market scenes, traditional cooking, craftsmanship — less polished, more true
Licence simplicity Complex systems — subscriptions, credit packs, confusing extended licences 3 clear tiers: Editorial, Commercial, Premium — price shown upfront
Entry price Often a mandatory monthly subscription or expensive credit bundles Pay-per-image from $14.99, no subscription required
Relationship with creators Anonymous contributors, minimal payout per sale A documented story and a real photographer behind every image
Catalog control Fixed catalog generated by millions of unrelated contributors A curated catalog that can grow around what our clients actually need

What makes us different, in practice

1. A real story behind the lens

Every image comes from someone who actually lives the reality being photographed — not a studio set, not a stock template. Buyers, especially NGOs and media, pay a premium for verifiable authenticity, and that story is part of what they are buying.

2. Focused on underserved niches

Rather than competing on generic “Africa” keywords against millions of images, our collection is built around specific, searchable subjects — African pottery, markets, traditional tools, daily life — including content tailored for NGOs and development organizations, a segment classic stock platforms rarely serve well.

3. Built around what you actually need

Can’t find the exact image you’re looking for? Tell us. Because this is a curated, human-run collection rather than an anonymous flood of uploads, requests directly shape what gets photographed next — something no large-scale stock platform can offer at this level.
